Film Noir Shoot At Sugarmill Night Club

Attended a group shoot with Hull photographers and models Facebook group.  We took over Sugarmill night club for the afternoon. All models and photographers shoot for free. An entrance was charged and the money was given to cancer research. £131.80 in total was raised.

Before the shoot I had discussed with Shaz (the model below) shooting a film noir set. She was very enthusiastic and keen to offer suggestions for the shoot.

I had read on the Strobist Blogspot on using hard light for a Film Noir Effect.

A single 430exII was used. I used a cable to trigger the flash, i used this because there was other photographers working around me using similar triggers. Cable is old school but it works.

I used a Rouge flash bender as a snoot. The a reflective umbrella partially opened to give a more concentrated directional light.

Thanks to Lou Watson and Abbie Towse for organising the shoot, Sugarmill for the venue and all the models, makeup artists and fellow photographers for their help and support of a worth while charity.

Day 5/30 Song that reminds you of someone…

House of Pain: Jump around.

While going through my music collection I had several songs that reminded me of different people. My favourite is Jump around by House of Pain. This fits with my life at the moment because if I did jump I would be in a world of pain, due to the surgery I had done on my ankle.

Day 88/365 Asymmetrical Symmetry
The reason the song reminds me of two of my friends is it was playing on the radio when we where driving back from Robin Hoods Bay. We had spent all day driving two Toyota Hi-lux pick-ups off road. The best part of the day was driving over a five foot high sew-saw. Glad to say that I am still good friends with both of them.

This was shot was taken at one of the motocross events I photographed on 35mm in the early nineties. Here’s Jase and Nige.

Day 2/30 least favourite song: The Offspring/ Pretty Fly (for a white guy)

The Offspring: Pretty fly (for a white guy)
Find this a really irritating song. And one of the reasons I won't get a tattoo.

Day 92/365 Day 2/30 Least Favourite Song: Offspring/ Pretty Fly(for a white guy)

The world loves wannabes

Hey, hey, do that brand new thing

Now he's getting a tattoo, yeah,

he's gettin' ink done He asked for a 13

but they drew a 31

Friends say he's trying too hard

and he's not quite hip

But in his own mind,

he's the, he's the dopest trip

New Year, Old thinking

In 2010 I set myself 10 things that I wanted to achieve in 2010. I feel that I only had a limited success with these. Two things in the last year have had a huge personal impact on my the birth of my granddaughter and the death of my mother. It has been one of the best and worst years I have known.
But with the new year here the past is the past and the future is the untraveled road. So here is my road map for 2011.

1 take more time for my family. Need a family holiday for all 6 of us this year. Get more photos of the kids they seem to be growing up at an alarming rate.

2 lose some weight and get fit. No more take ways and eating crappy food. Have loads of cook books that never get used. So knock the dust off them and get cooking.

3 Build up the wedding side of my business, this part of the photography I have had the greatest buzz over the last year. Also want to do more portrait shoots but need a studio.

4 Still not climbed Scar Fell Pike yet.

5 Want to get on the open water and get a sailing lesson.

6 Cover all of the British Ladies and girls trails championships. Want to be there when my friends daughter gets her podium place. Good luck Simone for '11

7 Redo website. And keep it up to date.

8 do more courses. Either a business course or a degree. Still not made my mind up which.

9 become more active in the gig scene within Hull. Have built some good contacts and some very talented from Hull. I want to become part of the process of the becoming discovered.

10 use my time more productively.

11 again last on the list but the most important. BE HAPPY!!

self portrait

self portrait, originally uploaded by Graham Warsap.

Taken awhile ago used a litho tutorial found here http://istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=49727

Then used a brick wall texture with a radial full layer. Might have a go at another one in the near future.
